Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhi’s Centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing student’s personality through community service. NSS, is a voluntary association of young people in colleges, universities working for a campus-community linkage.
The main principle of the NSS program is that it is organised by the students themselves, and both students and teachers through their combined participation in community service, get a sense of involvement in the tasks of nation building.
National Service Scheme was started in Dr S R Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and hearing in the year 2018.
Objectives of NSS:
- To enable the students to understand the community in which they work
- To understand themselves in relation to their community
- To identify the needs and problems in the community so they can find a solution
- To develop amongst themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility
- To apply education and find practical solutions to individual & community problems
- To develop the competence required for group living and sharing responsibilities
- To gain skills in mobilising community participation
- To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude
- To develop the capacity to meet emergencies and national disasters
- To practice national integration
NSS Motto and NSS Symbol
The motto or watchword of the National Service Scheme is ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings. It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society as a whole.
- The NSS symbol is based on the “Rath” wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Odisha
- The navy-blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind
- The red colour indicates that NSS volunteers are full of blood; i.e. lively, active, energetic and full of high spirit
- The giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space
Enrolment in NSS:
- NSS is a voluntary scheme, the NSS volunteers will be enrolled from the first and second year UG students
- To enrol as an NSS volunteer, contact the NSS Program Officer
- The enrolment in NSS is free
On successful completion of the required hours of service, NSS volunteers are issued a certificate
