Measuring the noise levels in industries and public areas ascertain that it is within permissible limits and not a hazard to the hearing sensitivity of the people in the environment. It has been found that 85dB of noise exposure for eight hours continuously is capable of causing permanent hearing loss. Hence, there is a necessity to see if the noise levels in the environment are in and around that level. The noise measurement facility available will help us to identify the noise levels at the source of the sound. This helps us to identify individuals who are exposed to high levels of noise and to advise people or organizations to implement measures to reduce the amount of noise or exposure to the noise overall.
To educate the public, the harmful effects of acoustic exposure at high intensities, the department has a noise awareness program. “The Karna” is a mannequin developed at the institute that lets you know how loud the music is that you listen to. The earphones from personal music systems can be placed inside a mannequin’s ear to display the levels of sound that reaches the ear, thereby letting you know if you have to reduce the volume at which you listen to the music.
