National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)

Established in 1989, NIOS operates as an autonomous organisation under the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. It plays a crucial role in administering secondary and senior secondary examinations through the open schooling system, which are recognized as equivalent to the examinations conducted by CBSE and CISCE.

One of the key features of NIOS is its flexibility, allowing learners to choose subject combinations according to their individual needs and goals. The organisation conducts examinations twice a year, typically in April & May and October & November, providing multiple opportunities for learners to appear and excel.

NIOS also extends its services to marginalised groups such as school dropouts and adolescents with disabilities. Through various programs like Open Basic Education from grades III to VIII and Secondary level education up to Grade X, NIOS enables individuals who couldn’t complete formal education to pursue their academic aspirations.
