Established in 1989, NIOS operates as an autonomous organisation under the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. It plays an important role in administering secondary and senior secondary examinations through the open schooling system, which are recognized as equivalent to the examinations conducted by CBSE and CISCE.
Here at the Dr. S.R. Chandrashekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing (Department of Psychology), we are passionate about removing barriers to education for all individuals. especially those with unique learning needs. That’s why we are proud to facilitate and support students utilizing the services of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
A Structured & Supportive Learning Environment
Our dedicated NIOS program runs Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We provide in-house instruction for a comprehensive range of subjects.
- Academics: Mathematics, English, Environmental Studies (EVS), Science and Sex education.
- Skill Development: Art and Craft, Painting, and Computer Science.
Integrated Therapy & Training
We believe in a holistic approach to education. Along with academics, we offer support services right here.
- Therapy Services: Children who require additional help are scheduled for Occupational Therapy (OT) & Behavioural Therapy (BT) sessions.
- Life Skills: Students benefit from dedicated behavioural training and pre-vocational training sessions to prepare them for life beyond the classroom.
- Facilities: Children have access to various facilities, including our on-site gym, sports promoting physical well being alongside mental growth.

- Celebrations: Festivals like Diwali, Christmas, and Children’s Day are celebrated with enthusiasm, focusing on active participation from our students and their parents.
- Parent Support: We regularly conduct parent training sessions to help parents better understand their child’s needs and how to support their learning and development at home.

- Multiple Chances to Shine: NIOS holds examinations in February/March every year. We prepare our students for these examination windows, giving them the best chance to appear when they are ready and excel at their own pace.
- Empowering Every Individual: Our department specifically focuses on supporting individuals from marginalized groups, including school dropouts and adolescents with disabilities. We help them access the full spectrum of NIOS programs for Open Basic Education (Grade III to VIII).
