Completed Projects

WIDEX Project:

The basic objective of this project was to compare the effects of high-power digital vs. analog hearing aids on speech, language and hearing skills in HI populations. This project was undertaken for a period of one year (2000-2001). Six children with profound hearing loss served as the experimental group, and the control group comprised of matched HI group (matched for age, degree of hearing loss) fitted with analog hearing aids. Results showed large differences in speech, language and hearing skills between the experimental and the control groups.

Prevention of “Noise Induced Hearing Loss” (NIHL):

This project was undertaken during 1998-1999, funded by Sir Dorabjee Tata Trust, and supported by Lions Club Bangalore East and Bangalore Traffic Police. The main aims were (1) to measure levels of noise in industry and road traffic and (2) to improve public awareness about causes, effects and prevention of NIHL. Results showed significant effects of noise (i.e., hearing loss, intolerance to any type of loud noises) on traffic police officers.

Neo-Natal screening:

The main aim was to identify neo-nates at risk for hearing loss using Oto Acoustic Emission (OAE) testing on a larger scale. The Institute conducted screening in two Hospitals in Bangalore, St. Johns Hospital and Manipal Hospital.
