Hearing problems in Adults

1. I cannot hear properly. What should I do?

First, an Audiologist has to evaluate your hearing. Based on the results of the testing, you may be advised either medical/surgical treatment or the use of hearing aids.

2. I hear some sound in my ears. Do I need to see a Doctor?

Yes, sounds in the ear, also called Tinnitus, and are caused by a variety of reasons. An ENT Doctor will be able to advice you.

3. I can hear sounds well, but can't understand what is being spoken. What do I do?

Speech discrimination problems can occur with many hearing disorders. You need to consult an Audiologist.

4. Can medicines given for some other conditions affect hearing?

Yes, many types of drugs do affect hearing (ototoxic drugs). While starting treatment, especially long-term treatment, it is wise to discuss these side effects with your physician.

5. Does my hearing improve after wearing a hearing aid regularly?

No. Hearing aids do not alter the actual hearing sensitivity of an individual. However, an appropriately fitted hearing aid will enable a person to hear well. Constant use of an appropriately fitted hearing aid will not result in any damage to the hearing sensitivity either.

6. Can noise produced by household gadgets cause hearing loss?

Typically, noise produced by household gadgets is not loud enough to cause hearing loss. In addition, duration of exposure is a critical factor in “noise induced hearing loss” (NIHL). However, noise produced by household gadgets can give rise to many other symptoms, such as irritability and sleep disturbances. Buy less noisy gadgets and try avoiding their simultaneous use.
