Sign Language Courses

Sign Language Session in Progress Basic Courses in Sign Language Level I:

The objective of this course is to provide the individual with the basic skills necessary to communicate with the deaf. This course consists of 30 hours which can be conducted as:

  • 10 hours/day for 3 days

  • 5 hours/day for 6 days

  • 3 hours/day for 2 weeks

Basic Course in Sign Language- Level II:

The objective is to make the individual fluent in signing and train him/her to provide basic interpretation services for the deaf. This course is conducted for

  • 3 hours every Saturday for 6 months.

Note: There is no age bar and no educational qualification is required for these two basic courses. Short-term courses are conducted on a regular basis for the benefit of individual candidates or Institutes.

Diploma Course in Interpretation:

The objective is to train the individual to become a professional interpreter for the deaf. The course is recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). The 1-year diploma course consists of three levels. Each level is a certificate course consisting of 300 hours (3 months). Classes are conducted everyday starting from July of the current year up to April in the next year.

  • Level A: Basic Sign Language course (3 months)

  • Level B: Semi professional interpreting (3 months)

  • Level C: Professional Interpreting (3 months)

Eligibility: Graduates of any discipline. Candidates who have deaf parents, deaf siblings or have been exposed to Sign Language will be given preference.

Special Education Cell (National Institute of Open Schooling-NIOS):

The just commenced special education cell at the Institute uses a psychological-sociological educational approach to training school drop-outs and candidates (with or without HI) who are unable to cope with their curriculum. The cell has a current intake of 10 students per year (only boys). These boys will be taught academics systematically on a one-to-one basis. Alternatively, students who cannot complete school will be taught functional reading and writing skills.

Duration: 2 years

Age: 15 + years

Pre-Vocational Training Program:

Basic English and Sign Language courses are conducted for non-English speaking young deaf adults, where they are also taught basic typing skills. This course helps them

  • Get non-voice jobs in BPOs

  • Go for college education in the English medium

Duration: 4 months

Courses offered: 3 courses a year

  • January – April

  • June – Septembers

  • September – December

Eligibility: Any deaf student with S.S.L.C pass or fail certificate

Intake: 10 -15 students per class

Vocational Skills Training Program:

Duration: 3 months (300 hours)

Curriculum:

  • Foundation course in English (100 hours)

  • Sign Language and communication skills (80 hours)

  • Typing skills (100 hours)

  • Personality development (20 hours)

Intake: 10 students
